UiTM Master’s students get real world clean energy exposure

As part of the Master Programme and Transforming Energy Access – Learning Partnership (TEA-LP) course, students participated in an enriching educational site visit to two significant clean energy facilities: a 30 MW Large-Scale Solar (LSS) Photovoltaic (PV) plant with a single-axis tracking system in Kulim, Kedah, and the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility at UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang.

At the solar PV plant, students gained firsthand exposure to the operation of a utility-scale renewable energy project that contributes to Malaysia’s growing clean energy capacity. The visit provided valuable insights into solar farm design, energy generation processes, performance monitoring, grid integration, and the advantages of single-axis tracking technology in maximising solar energy harvest throughout the day. Interactions with industry professionals enabled students to better understand the technical and operational aspects of large-scale renewable energy deployment.
The visit to the UiTM Pulau Pinang BESS facility further enhanced students’ understanding of the critical role of energy storage in modern power systems. Students learned how battery energy storage supports side demand management, improves energy efficiency, reduces peak demand, and enhances campus energy resilience. The practical exposure highlighted how BESS can complement renewable energy sources by addressing intermittency challenges and optimising energy consumption within a smart campus environment.

Overall, the site visit provided an excellent platform for students to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world practice. The experience broadened their perspectives on emerging clean energy technologies and strengthened their understanding of the integrated solutions required for a sustainable energy future. Such exposure is invaluable in preparing future energy professionals and researchers to contribute meaningfully towards Malaysia’s clean energy transition mission, net-zero aspirations, and sustainable development goals.
