The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a federal government university in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. The university is the oldest university of technology in Nigeria and was established in 1980 by executive fiat with the composition and appointment of the first provisional council by Nigeria’s first Executive President, Shehu Shagari. It became the first of three such universities set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria, which sought to establish a University of Technology in each geo-political region and particularly in a state which did not have a conventional university. FUTO began with 225 students and 60 staff, and has since grown to educate more than 25,000 students.

Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) is a public technical university in Accra, Ghana, founded in 2005. There are roughly 6,500 undergraduate students and 2,000 postgraduate students enrolled at GCTU. The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is a public collegiate university located in the historic town of Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana. The campus has a rare seafront and sits on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. UCC was established in October 1962 as a university college in response to the country’s dire need for highly qualified and skilled manpower in the education sector. Its original mandate was therefore to train graduate teachers for second cycle institutions, teacher training colleges and technical institutions, a mission that the two existing public universities at the time were unequipped to fulfill. From an initial student enrollment of 155 in 1963, the University of Cape Coast now has a total student population of about 80,000.
